Why is fullmetal alchemist brotherhood the same
FMAB aired on our local stations first. I asked one of my friends about it and he said there was also a FMA. Thank you for explaining. Did you know this trick? Newton will be so jealous or envious? Two reasons why I want to watch the original fma is because my brothers who are way older than me watched it along with other great animes that aired in the philippines in early and late s and wanted to know what it felt like watching the shows they used to love.
The second reason is the rewrite op. That opening is way too nostalgic. I just came across the op video yesterday on youtube and then I remembered listening to this when I was a kid playing with blocks and my brothers watching the show… Thanks for this article, I should watch brotherhood first then.
Still though, even with this huge disadvantage the original had, it still was legendary, especially how iconic characters died in the beginning and middle of the story unlike most other animes which keep the iconic characters alive throughout or kill them off in the very end. Watch FMA up until Lab 5 and then give yourself a break…. Or skip those episodes too. From there on, continue to watch Brotherhood till the end. Im a huge fan of anime sticking to original adaptations, more so after Tokyo Ghoul RE.
This article helped a lot af. Thanks a lot! This article AND thread are amazing. Lots of great opinions. Also great writing by you Jordan, great comparison piece and exactly what I was looking for. Some spoilers ahead, just wanted to shout out my opinion and read some others. I am just starting season 4 of Brotherhood. As people have stated, Brotherhood has almost all the main characters from the original plus a bunch of extras like Ling Yao and obvi Xiao Mei.
Lastly, gotta shout out my boy Maes Hughes. Realest OG out there, also kind of epic that the two works divulge immediately after his death. It works because he is such a lovable character, and it creates a great jumping point. Great article Jordan, im a huge anime fan and i gotta say i never watched brotherhood before because i thought it was basicly the same thing with better graphics…. Just found this site to add up the tallies on which one to watch.
Although the emotional aspect of FMA 03 got be really wanting to watch that, I love that feeling like Hellsing and Basikisk had done. This is very helpful but its to late for me i wached first but i wanted to know the divergeing point. May be not my taste. By the way i am on 39th episode and its a long and unbearable experience, what a waste of time. I wanna to ask that brotherhood is the same as version or better. Sure, it follows the manga but most anime stray from manga in some form or another.
I just finished the first one and am now getting around to Brotherhood, so I was very happy to find your analysis between the two.
Thank you so much! I am watching them both again from the start. Brotherhood needs FMA in order to really feel the character development. If anything, watch the first half of FMA through episode 26 , which were made with the manga until they ran out of written material, then, start brotherhood from the beginning to catch the slight differences Brotherhood catches up to that point in only a few episodes.
Truly, imho, you will not regret watching FMA. It also fills in some gaps that are glossed over in Brotherhood. After that, if you want to see the different direction the anime took it, finish up the series. Honestly, this series are terrible. Dropped FMA due to the lack of everything: terrible character development, terrible story pacing, literally nothing happens until they kill a certain character. I quit there. Excellent article, you have comments for years! I saw the version first and afterward picked up Brotherhood pretty quickly.
I think it was or so. There were a lot of differences between the shows by the end, mostly the homunculi. Very informative without any real spoilers. Thank u very much. As an avid anime fan I tend to fully avoid duplicate productions as a fundimental rule. Thoe thanks to your informative comparison on the fullmetal topic I am infact going to watch brotherhood in high hopes that the ending and build up redeems fullmetals ending letdown for me.
Thank you. Tbh my experience with full metal alchemist as a series, mainly because i watched first 30 episodes and the rest was not translated on the site i was watching it so i switched from fma to brotherhood which was translated. Watched brotherhood tiil the end and the whole mix was good to watch, at first it was kinda confusing because it was so different but in the end i felt awesome watching it.
It was definitely an interesting experience ;D. Tbh my experience with full metal alchemist as a series was unusual, mainly because i watched first 30 episodes and the rest was not translated on the site i was watching it so i switched from fma to brotherhood which was translated. My question is that FMAB has more episodes that the first ,but, I want to know if there is a certain point you should start brotherhood at after the original e.

However, this all changes when Ed and Al go to visit their alchemy teacher. From here, we see things change pretty radically.
Villains within the series known as Homunculi, whose personalities and names are inspired by the seven deadly sins , are changed drastically. Greed, for example, stands out as having some of the largest changes.
Both series are excellent, so much so that comparing them is somewhat of a nitpick. Both are beautifully animated by studio Bones of My Hero Academia fame and share the same voice casts. Both plots are highly engrossing and give the audience a ton of food for thought in between gorgeously animated fight scenes.
What is Fullmetal Alchemist? What is Brotherhood? Main Differences Between Fullmetal Alchemist and Brotherhood Fullmetal Alchemist is the pioneer series that first came out in and features its influence on the Japanese manga art form whereas Brotherhood is the second adaptation of the original Fullmetal Alchemist that was premiered in Fullmetal Alchemist is the shorter series consisting of 50 episodes whereas Brotherhood is a relatively longer series that consists of 64 episodes.
There is variation in the use of advanced animations between the two. The Fullmetal Alchemist lacks advanced animations and engaging backgrounds whereas Brotherhood used advanced animations and better color choices that make it visually appealing. Dante is the central protagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist whereas Homunculus plays the lead antagonist in the second adaptation Brotherhood.
The original Fullmetal Alchemist portrays extensive characters but has less influence of manga whereas Brotherhood has disoriented characters but follows the original manga storyline. Fullmetal Alchemist is the original series with 50 episodes but is less influenced by manga. Although he was originally a slave, he was granted his near-immortality by Father well before the events of the series took place.
The Gate is the largest major change in the series. The Gate is also guarded by a being commonly referred to as Truth , and who is responsible for taking the required tolls from alchemists who perform human transmutation. Those who are capable of performing alchemy have their own gate, and if that gate should be removed by sacrificing it to Truth , they will no longer be able to perform alchemy.
Furthermore, the Gate derives its powers from the souls of those who have died on Earth and is what powers the transmutations performed by alchemists. Brotherhood is actually more faithful to the Manga. The first 'version' follows the Manga to some extent about half the show although it adds some details that do not follow the Manga. The whole thing regarding the creation of Homunculus is completely different in the first series.
The whole Ishbal incident is also different. The role Hohenheim plays in the first series is rather ridiculous comparing to his 'real' role.
And there is also no Father in the first series As for the number of episodes: the 'reboot' actually catches up to the first version rather fast in about the first 4th and then has 'new material' comparing to the first one, but actually it is just going according to the manga until the end of it.
Brotherhood also has more episodes 64, compared to While they both start the same way, the first one starts to develop following a whole different path than the Manga. This is because when it was being aired, the Manga was not done yet, so the plot as well as the end of the anime are invented. The second was done after the Manga ended, so it respects the original Manga much more.
I watched both because I didn't know of this distinction. But I can tell you quite objectively, that even if the first one is not so faithful, it was of very good quality, speaking of plot twists, unexpected changes in history and other similar devices. The new Fullmetal Alchemist series is completely worth it since it adapts the original manga from beginning to end. The previous series, while being really good in my opinion , diverges from the manga in the whole second half and ends in a way that was not supposed to be.
The new series follows everything, retells in just a few chapters what we previously watched and then tells a completely new story with a completely new end. There are quite a few differences, actually.
The "original", or the "first one" is an entirely different storyline from the manga. The manga was the original thing, so most people hate the first FMA series. Al gets his body back and stays in "their world", while Ed is stuck in "our world" with his fake right arm and left leg.
Al is 10 the age he was when this chaos happened again and has no memories of the last four years. But, in Conqueror of Shamballa, he gains his memories when he goes back to "our world" with Ed, after Ed brutally abandons him. Although, in Brotherhood, it sticks to the storyline of the manga.
In the first FMA, the Homunculi were created from failed human transmutations explaining Sloth's appearance , while, in Brotherhood, the Homunculi were Father's humane "flaws" that he extracted from his personality and put into the "artificial beings".
Ironically enough, his wanting to become a god was awfully greedy, even after he'd rid of that "flaw".
