In the late s, The Bradenton Herald, a local paper, started referring to the area as Bradenton Beach in a possible effort to distinguish it from mainland Cortez. In , Bradenton Beach was officially incorporated as a city. The booming population reinforced the need for a superior bridge connection. In , the city developed a new bridge while the old bridge was altered to a popular local community pier which was recently revamped into a tourist area in a massive rejuvenation project.

The Anna Maria Historical Society at Pine Ave also provides extensive details about the early settlement of the island and how the Bradenton Beach area was developed, along with a few early structures that you can view. You can also visit the Historic Bridge Street area to this day, with shops and several recently launched restaurants housed in restored buildings. The Bridge Street Pier, once the only connection Anna Maria Island had to the world, is a renowned fishing pier and gathering destination on the island.
In the art, antiques, and culinary treasures of this city lie the success stories of two brothers, Joseph and Hector Braden. In , they moved to the Manatee River after losing their Tallahassee plantations during the Money Panic of During their stay in Manatee, they got to know about the land claims and the abundance of natural resources in the Manatee area.
With an intent to grab the opportunity, the brothers started a new plantation, five miles away from the mouth of the river.
Rumor has it that he started off during the eye of the storm, but his horse got stuck in the river. As said in history books, Hector was found the next day still seated upon his horse, firmly grasping the reins with his eyes fully open. Unmoved by the tragic event, Joseph Branden continued to focus on the sugar plantation that the brothers had once dreamed about.
He built the Braden Sugarmill at the meeting point of the Braden and Manatee rivers. There were some hurdles initially.
