What is the difference between a jeep lj and tj
Apart from the obvious difference in wheel base between the Wrangler TJ and Wrangler LJ, other differences over the years were in the engines. Chrysler has a pre-program for Jeep-truck engineering and the evolution of the Wrangler TJ began there. Designers worked on the project producing different proposals for design between and until a proposal was selected. After testing prototypes, production of the TJ began in after the previous YJ went out of production.
The Wrangler TJ model was unveiled early in as a modernized revolution. This new Wrangler had core suspension for better handling and riding. The classic round headlights of the CJ model came back in the TJ model and it featured a 4. There was a right-hand drive variation for foreign export.
An automatic transmission was made for postal carriers in this variation. The Rubicon trim introduced in the same year had the wheelbase and off-road features of the Wrangler LJ. The increased wheelbase made the LJs towing capacity double of the TJ model. Login Register. The year Wrangler TJ this model is a good option for off and on the road as handling on bot terrains is fair.
The price for this model is also good, although different editions and modifications value differently. No no no its hey!!!!! Reactions: tomtaylz. Having had both, a 97 TJ and now an 05 LJ LJ all the way. The only thing I miss on the TJ is the pull for the headlights. I also kinda miss the ax Starrs TJ Guru. LJ all day long lol. I just feel that the higher the SWB version gets it starts to look goofy. LJR is a classic look. Last edited: Sep 5, Reactions: bobthetj GTboosted TJ Enthusiast.
Chris Administrator Staff Member. I prefer the looks of the TJ. The LJ needs 35s at minimum to look right. Reactions: Sancho. On the fact Unlimited can carry more gear, of course they can. If that's important to you, that's what you need to go with. For me, I've never not had enough room to carry what I needed in my TJ. If it won't fit, I will do without it And after 22 years of that, I've never wished for more storage room.
And I like its shorter wheelbase for the type of wheeling I do. It has a better breakover angle than an LJ that would need a taller suspension lift and bigger tires to achieve the same breakover angle.
A good breakover angle is a key thing for the trails I enjoy most. Joined Feb 24, Messages 3, Location Illinois. Both the TJ and the LJ have their advantages and their disadvantages. In my opinion, the LJ's have been over hyped because they were only produced for a few years. I'm constantly weaving between tight trees, oftentimes pivoting around trees using my rear tire.
I don't think I'd be able to do that with an LJ. Similarly, if you decrease the vehicle ride height and thus drop the center of gravity, the thrust between the ground and the tire has a smaller moment arm to cause the vehicle to rotate about its Cg. So a low vehicle with and long wheelbase is key to climbing steep grades and avoiding flipping. The Jeep will fall backwards. With a longer wheelbase, the center of gravity is farther forward relative to the rear contact patch, and a larger incline angle is needed before such a tip condition occurs.
Backflip-avoidance is a major benefit of the TJ Unlimited over the smaller TJ, but, relatedly, so is traction up inclines. Part of that, I bet, has to do with a higher likelihood that the front and rear axles experience disparate grip levels at a given time. In that case, all four tires will have to deal with the slick terrain, and the vehicle may not make it up. But if the wheelbase is longer than the slick section, two tires will struggle on the slick surface, while two with grip yank the vehicle up the obstacle.
Thus, the angle of the incline, and thus the load transfer to the rear tires, has been effectively reduced. Thus, the net grip decreases. Even the base Jeep Wrangler LJ came with a Dana 30 front axle, limited slip differential-equipped Dana 44 rear axle not the much-maligned, highly breakable Dana 35 found on the standard Wrangler , and short 3.
The base transmission was a 42RLE four-speed slushbox, which seems to be regarded as just fine, though in came the NSG , a Daimler-sourced six-speed that gained its notoriety as the decently beefy but unrefined transmission standard in the heavier JK Wrangler four-door. On top of all that, under the hood was the unkillable, torquey horsepower, lb-ft 4. First I talked with my buddy Steve, who has taken his off-roading to Moab and also drives it daily.
