Misty May-Treanor, 34, beach volleyball player and two-time Olympic medalist. My favorite power food is Greek yogurt and honey. Before soccer games when I was little, my dad would make me have a spoonful of bee pollen and honey. He told me it would give me energy. Do you have a sort of food mantra or philosophy that guides your eating?
The more colorful the food the better. I try to add color to my diet, which means vegetables and fruits. Why do you think cooking is so relaxing for you? When I eat every three hours I can focus better, feel stronger, last longer.
Describe your food philosophy. The greener the better. So what kind of stuff do you like to cook? It makes me really happy if I can make a successful dinner. What do you eat before you compete? I eat a lot of almond butter and honey sandwiches throughout the day, because that keeps me satisfied. Are you concerned with good or bad carbohydrates? Eric Shanteau, 28, swimmer. You were diagnosed with testicular cancer right before competing in the Olympics.
Having cancer changed my whole perspective on swimming and life. I think I was a really good swimmer before cancer, but I was a great swimmer after cancer. I realized there are much bigger things in life than competing.
When I came back after treatment I just relaxed and had fun. A happy athlete is a better athlete. What do you typically have for breakfast? I shred a plain wheat biscuit, dump some Grape-Nuts on it, and add some kind of vanilla almond nut cluster.
Then I put in a handful of raisins, a big spoonful of ground flaxmeal, a handful of walnuts, raspberries and cut-up kiwi with the skin on. I put a splash of almond milk on there, then put some type of organic yogurt on top. Getting the right food in my body 30 minutes after working out helps so much more with the next workout and has really changed my training.
So what are some things that you cook really well? You must also believe in one another, have a common goal, and trust each other. I love olympic lifting cleans, jerks, snatches , squatting and explosive jump drills. I also implement track and hill workouts with a running instructor, pilates helps me maintain a strong and healthy core since that is important in our sport. Since I am not the tallest player out there at times, my jump has to be strong from the very match to the very last match.
Recovery is equally as important to the lifting as well and that comprises of massage, ice baths, and stretching. Do you take some special diet or have a strict menu that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit? I like to listen to my body but I do watch what I eat.
I try to eat whole nutritious foods because that is what is going to fuel my body and it is especially important that I eat enough calories with the amount of training that I did.
I would work with my trainers too in order to make sure I came in at my playing weight that I feel the strongest at. Drinking plenty of water even throughout the night is important.
Carrying small snacks helps to keep energy up. Advice and motivational words to our inspiring and budding beach volleyball playing girls who all are your fans, what they should do for their climb to ladder of success in the field of beach volleyball? Have a goal, write it down and keep it somewhere that you can see it every day.
Make decisions that will allow you to reach that goal and not let you stray from it. Coming back from the torn achilles tendon was difficult but I felt good as a individual and as a team heading into London.
I knew we could do it, it would just be our most difficult road to gold. When we won I felt amazing. I knew this would most likely be the last Olympics I played in so it meant a lot to me to hear our National Anthem again. FBG: Do you listen to music when you work out? What are a few of your favorite tunes? For lifting and running and doing workouts, you need that music in your head to keep going, so I always like a good rhythm.
I find that with it I can sustain workouts a little longer. My most recent downloads are David Guetta. Give yourself time. Especially when you want to get in better shape, diet is more important than exercise. Eat better and the results will come.
